Vol 7: Class 19, 20, 21 & 22

Defeating Karate kicks first involves knowing how the karate kicks are performed and used and understanding both the strengths and weaknesses inherent to the techniques. Of course in our Phase I class we are referring to average basic common karate kicks practiced in most Karate schools in America today.

Defeating these kicks is one of the basic Phase I classes in the Clear’s Kun Tao Silat curriculum and of course there is much more advanced material further along in our curriculum as we definitely understand that a senior black belt in a good karate system will have more than just the basics to work with and will move much better and with more fluidity and less telegraphing than most folks who practice and train these kicks.

The 5 most basic karate kicks are

The front snap kick

The round house kick

The side kick

The spinning back kick

The crescent kick which can easily be an ax kick

Each of these kicks have their strengths and defeating them means avoiding those and taking advantages of the weaknesses of the kicks as practiced by most people.

The biggest weaknesses of Karate kicks are as follows:

1. They are usually thrown above the waist which means because of the travel distance that they normally take to long from the time they are thrown until they actually land. For instance a front snap kick thrown to the head will normally take about 3 times longer to arrive than a front snap kick thrown at the knee.

2. The kicks are normally telegraphed and with a little practice (to develop a trained eye) they can be seen way before they are actually thrown. There are two basic aspects to the basic telegraph.

a. The back leg is used to throw the kick and the cocking and getting ready to throw the kick is obvious to a trained eye.

b. The body of the kicker tends to turn or shift in preparation to throw the kick and again the signals can easily be picked up by someone who has trained to see it.

3. As a result of 1, 2a and 2b a practitioner who is ready with a knee high kick that is simply lifted and pushing can kick and pick off the kickers stable leg as soon as the kicker starts to launch a kick. The knee kick normally lands first and with enough force that the karate type kick is usually completely stopped in place.

4. Most Karate students train to throw kicks from a stationary stopping or very slow pace of movement at the actual time of the execution of a kick.

As a result another simple strategy to easily defeat karate type kicks is to simple get moving and stay mobile no matter what the kicker tries to do to get you to stay in place. This will easily defeat the majority of even skilled karate type kickers kicks.

It sounds to simple but I did not come to this conclusion overnight and this has been tested over and over again by students and practitioners and in the last twenty years has been proven (sometimes quite drastically) in the UFC – MMA type fights.

As always the first priority in any attack is to be somewhere else or to escape.

However attackers will do their best to make escape impossible.

Be somewhere else…

As always the first priority in any attack is to be somewhere else or to escape.

However attackers will do their best to make escape impossible.

Only fight one person at a time.

In the movies when the hero is surrounded the bad guys step up one at a time to fight and be defeated.

This is ideal. Unfortunately in the real world attackers don’t do this for you.

You have to do all the work yourself and prevent them from surrounding you in the first place.

Force them to come at you one at a time by making sure there is always one person in between you and everyone else.

So…

You are surrounded. More than 1 person can get to you at once.

1 person is in between you and everyone else.

Fight on the move.

You must be able to use your techniques while walking or running to maintain the “not so bad” position and prevent the attackers from surrounding you.

Learning to put 1 person in between you and every one else is only the first step but it’s by far the most important.

So grab at least two training partners and practice your movement and positioning. Don’t even worry about techniques yet. Just focus on moving so you cannot be surrounded.

First priority is to get out of the middle.

Attackers will close in and try to surround you. Stay moving to prevent this.

If you need some specific drills to help work this out then check out the new Multiple attackers DVD.

It features a bunch of drills that will teach you how to manage a group of attackers and maintain the superior position we discussed here.

It also includes how to:

Get through someone who is blocking a doorway

Take someone much bigger than you and put them in between you and everyone else.

Destabilize an opponent so you can control their position.

Use your opponent as a weapon so the attackers will be more worried about getting hit by each other than getting you

and much more.

Vol 7: Class 19, 20, 21 & 22

In Clear’s Silat Jamming is used as a technique to control the other person’s entire body through one point of contact.

For instance if the attacker has their fists up in an aggressive stance then the defender can jam the arm at the elbow to control the attackers body through the elbow.

To do this you must…

move the attacker’s elbow into their body downward and at an angle and in a position so that when they try to throw a punch their own elbow pushing into their body stops them from being able to throw the other punch.

This technique could be performed by intercepting an incoming punch and then moving the arm across the attacker’s body so that the elbow can be controlled and used the same way to stop the other punch from ever being thrown.

Jamming can also occur from the inside position…

by controlling the closest arm and pushing the attacker’s head back and to the side of the opposite arm while walking into them and past their current position.

Other areas of the body that can be used to control the attackers body are the shoulder as used in zero pressure and the hip in much the same way.

You can control the opponent’s body movement by stomping and standing on the back of their knee. You push forward and roll the muscle and / or tendon so that the edge of your foot or shoe causes their nerve to be pushed against the bone just below the knee.

Done properly with a bit of pressure the opponent will be very weak or / and unable to move and you will be standing with their leg pinned to the floor. You can also step on the foot where it meets the ankle or leg and put pressure so that they are unable to correctly stand and they will feel weak as a kitten.

You can stand on the foot at the outside position or from the inside position depending on what is easiest depending on the physical positon of them relative to you at the time of execution.
